 Toilet not flushing properly
Author: jake4767 (NY)

I have an American Standard toilet that when I flush the waster flows out of the tank and the bowl fills to the brim then slowly drains to its normal level. I'll snake it and it will flish fine for a few times then it will happen again so I snake it again and it will work for a few flushes. The other plumbing fixtures in the house are draining fine so I'm assuming there is not a glog in the main line drain. Any thoughts as to what could be causing this? Thanks.

There may be more blockage than your snake is clearing, or there is blockage further down the line. The stool should be pulled and examined and aheck for water standing in the main depending on what is found the main line snaked also. I would recommend you call a pro out, but I would wait until tomorrow to avoid additional weekend rates.

You may do well to go through the toilet to make sure it is in optimum working order before giving up on it.

Auger the toilet to make sure the trapway is clear. Use a 3' General or, Ridgid closet auger with a drop head that has a retriever hook. About $40 at most supply houses. If you see the $10 econo auger save your money! IMHO they would be a waste of $0.01 to buy one if they set the price that low.

Set the tank water level to the full line or, 5/8" below the top of the overflow tube. Make sure that water sprays out of the bowl refill tube and down the overflow tube when the tank is refilling.

Replace the flapper with a proper new one.

Take a piece of coat hanger wire and push it into each of the holes inside the bowl under the rim. Make sure that the siphon jet hole in the bottom of the bowl is clear as well.

If you use an in tank bowl cleaner like the blue smurf glop that sits in the corner of the tank remove it and don't use it again.

If the flush does not improve after all this then you can be pretty sure it's time for a nice new Toto toilet to replace it.

The bowl if filling to the rim, I highly doubt it has anything to do with the tank, cleaners, poking the holes etc., Stoppage for one reason or another, can't see it being anything else. Get the Gerber! wink

It definitely sounds like there is something in the trapway that you are not getting out, or, the toilet is a weak flusher.

When you auger the toilet use a good quality auger like a 3' Ridgid, or, General closet auger with a drop head...

No disrespect to you Iron Ranger but Gerber is one of those brands I left behind years ago... It pretty much doesn't matter what they come out with now... Toto... I love em!

Yea I'll put in a Gerber when spec'd or customer supplied...
But I'm not going to run out and pick one.

Gerber, Briggs, Eljer, Mansfield, Am. Std., Kohler...
To many years of junk...
Did I miss any?

No disresptect taken at all. We all have our own likes and dislikes. Gerber is proven in my own home, they work. They are a simple design with simple tank parts and very quick and easy to install. 2 inch glazed traps, three inch flush valve on the Avalanche. In my opinion it just doesn't get any better.

You still have a blockage that hasn't been cleared yet. If it persists, remove the toilet and use a 3+ inch head to clear and clean. Lean the toilet on its side and inspect the discharge throat of the toilet for any debris. Reinstall using a new wax gasket or neo-seal gasket.

Best Wishes
